Admirals drop Lenoir City, 69-7

Farragut made the short trip to Lenoir City on Friday, October 14th, to take on the Panthers in a Region 3-5A showdown.  The Admirals made the most of their opportunities during the first half, featuring a 34-point outburst in the second quarter to take a 48-0 lead into the break.

The Panthers moved the ball well behind the legs and arm of sophomore quarterback, Gabe Williams, but were stymied by six costly turnovers.  In return, the Admirals’ offense scored touchdowns on all seven first-half possessions.  The Admirals were led offensively by quarterbacks Adam Fulton and Jake Evans.  The duo combined to pass for 371 yards and five touchdowns on 14-of-20 passing.

Lenoir City received the opening kickoff and moved the ball into the Farragut red zone, but the Admirals’ senior DE Will Everett stripped the ball away from RB Zane Bowen to end the threat.

The Admirals began their first possession at their own 12-yard line and marched 88 yards in eight plays to take an early 7-0 lead.  The drive was capped by a 37-yard TD strike from Fulton to WR Braden Collins.  Collins finished the night with four receptions for 68 yards and the one TD.

The Panthers gained 35 yards on eight plays on their next possession.  The drive stalled when a third-down pass was broken up by CB Grayson Utterback.  Zane Bowen, who doubles as the Panthers’ punter, came in and booted a 39-yard punt to pin the Admirals deep in their own territory.

Starting from their own five yard-line, Farragut once again moved the ball behind the arm of Fulton and the running of RB Amon Johnson.  Johnson gained 14 yards on the first play to move the ball out to the 19.  Fulton hit Collins with an 11-yard pass to set up a 70-yard scoring strike to WR Jaden Gibbs.  The sophomore WR ended the night with 3 receptions for 153 yards and 2 TD’s.  The Admirals were ahead 14-0 after the first quarter.

Following another Lenoir City punt, the Admirals began their next drive from their own 36 yard-line.  The offense covered 64 yards in five plays, capped by Fulton’s third TD pass of the night.  This one covering 29 yards to fellow senior, Jack DeVault.  The Admirals featured RB Isaiah Gibbs on the drive, the sophomore rushed twice for 22 yards.

The Admirals intercepted Lenoir City on the next possession when OLB Alex Williams stepped in front of Landon Miller on first down.

Amon Johnson carried on the next play for 21 yards down to the 3-yard-line.  Amon capped the drive with a short TD run. The senior RB led the team in rushing with 98 yards on eight carries and two touchdowns.  The Admirals were up 28-0 with 9:48 left in the half.

The Panthers once again moved the ball into Farragut territory, but QB Williams’ pass fell incomplete on fourth-down to end the drive.  The Admirals took over at their own 29, and RB Cooper Hardin carried 11 yards for a first down to start the drive.  Fulton was 3-of-4 passing for 39 yards on the drive, while Hardin carried in a short TD run to build the FHS lead to 35-0 with 2:52 left to play.

The Panthers fumbled on the ensuing kickoff when LB Cade Burkey stripped the ball out of the hands of the returner.

Junior DB Andrew Williams jumped on top of the ball to set up the Admirals in great field position.  The Admirals needed just one play as Johnson took a hand-off and darted in from 25 yards out.

Lenoir City moved the ball to mid-field on their next possession before they were forced to punt.  The Admirals took over from their own 16-yard line with reserve QB Jake Evans behind center.  The sophomore found WR Wyatt Lucas on second-down for 19 yards to move the ball out near mid-field.

Evans found Grayson Utterback wide open over the middle on the next play, and the junior WR raced in from 57 yards to end the first-half scoring.

The Admirals continued to find big scoring plays in the second-half as Evans hit Jaden Gibbs in stride for a 71-yard TD pass in the third quarter.  The sophomore QB was 4-of-6 passing for 159 yards and two touchdowns.

The Admirals’ reserves on defense forced three more turnovers in the second-half to set up the offense with short scoring drives.  Junior DL Nolan Davis pounced on a Panther fumble, as did sophomore LB Josh Moses.  Moses later cashed in his own recovery with a 1-yard TD run.  RB Isaiah Gibbs was able to score from 14-yards out following the Davis fumble recovery.  Sophomore DB Jon Buell ended the game with an interception.  Freshman QB Gavin Wilkinson logged valuable playing time and led the offense on two scoring drives.

Overall, the Admirals out-gained the Panthers 582-to-236 in total offense, and gained a season-high 24 first downs.  Five Admirals combined to rush for 211 yards on 35 carries and five touchdowns.  Other highlights included Joe Doyle’s play in the kicking game.  The senior P/PK was perfect, 6-for-6, on PAT’s,  and sent seven of his 11 kickoffs in the end zone for touchbacks.  Doyle also punted once for 44 yards.

Farragut Shuts Out West 20-0

By Patrick Givens, KNS-sports@knoxnews.com

There were no heroic individual performances for Farragut High School on Friday night. There was no need. The visiting Admirals (6-1) turned in an unselfish effort in all phases in a 20-0 win over West at Bill Wilson Field.

“I asked them not to be selfish,” said Farragut coach Eddie Courtney. “It doesn’t matter who gets the credit.”

“That’s why you win as a football team. I’m proud of them for that.”

The Admirals’ defense bent early but never broke.

West (4-3) drove 67 yards in 16 plays on it’s opening possession but came up empty when Logan Bowers missed a 30-yard field goal.

“It’s a back-breaker,” said West coach Jeff Harig.

On the ensuing play, Cooper Hardin’s 75-yard run set up Joe Doyle’s 22-yard field goal with 11:15 remaining in the second quarter.

That proved to be all the offense the Admirals would need. After the opening drive, Farragut yielded just 137 yards, forcing nine negative plays and two interceptions in the process.

“They had to be good tonight, because West is a good, athletic football team,” said Courtney of his defense.

Farragut led 3-0 at halftime.

After starting 2-for-9, Farragut quarterback Adam Fulton found his stride in the second half, tossing touchdown passes to Hardin (12 yards) and Jacob Warren (10 yards). Doyle added a career long 49-yard field goal.

Demarcus Nelson made his first career start at quarterback for West, passing for 47 yards and running for another 72. Nelson left in the third quarter with an undisclosed injury. He was replaced by Zach Harshey, who completed 9 of 15 passes for 47 yards and an interception.

“With our defense, it doesn’t take many (points),” said Harig. “We’re in search for three touchdowns. The search continues.”

Farragut’s win snaps a four-game winning streak for West in the series and avenges the Admirals’ only regular season loss from last season.

Admirals outgun the Cougars, 38-28

By Patrick Givens, KNS-sports@knoxnews.com

JACKSBORO — After losing star wide receiver Davis Simmons to an injury against Bearden, the Farragut High School football team needed a playmaker to emerge.

Enter Braden Collins.

Collins caught three first half touchdown passes and Cooper Hardin ran for two second half scores as the visiting Admirals (5-1, 2-1 in Region 3-5A) knocked off Campbell County 38-28 in a pivotal Region 3-5A contest.

“Our coaches talked about it since he got hurt,” said Collins. “We had to step up and make bigger plays for our team.”

Collins’ touchdowns covered 6, 28, and 42 yards. Farragut quarterback Adam Fulton completed 11 of 26 passes for 209 yards, with 119 going to Collins.
Hardin rushed for 112 of his 113 yards after the intermission.

His two 7-yard touchdown runs turned a tie game at halftime into a 35-28 Farragut lead.

“I told them at halftime ‘You’ve got to be physical’,” said Farragut coach Eddie Courtney. “We’ve got to run the football to win games like this. That’s what we did.”

Joe Doyle’s 47-yard field goal with 9 minutes, 1 second left stretched the lead to 38-28.

“Our kicking coach Gerald Robinson gave me the yes that he could hit that one,” said Courtney.

“We just had confidence that he would.”

Quarterback Zach Rutherford, who was 27 of 41 for 382 yards, threw two touchdown passes for Campbell County (6-1, 2-1) and Elijah Phillips ran for two more. Max Farris hauled in 11 passes for 221 yards.

However, five turnovers, including two interceptions in the final 4:51, doomed the Cougars.

“It came down to about 3-5 plays,” said Campbell County coach Justin Price.

“We turned the ball over a couple times, and they didn’t. That’s usually the difference in the game when you’ve got two really good teams going at it.”

The win was Farragut’s 15th in as many tries against Campbell County and keeps the Admirals’ hopes for a region championship alive.

“We have to do each week like we did tonight,” said Courtney. “In week 11, we’ll see where we’re at.”

Admirals cruise past Karns on Homecoming, 71-3

It was a night for many Admirals to showcase their skills in front of a Homecoming crowd on Friday night.  The defense set the tone early forcing three turnovers and a safety in the first half, and the offense was sure to cash in on the Beavers’ mistakes.  The Admirals scored touchdowns on every offensive possession racing to a 51-3 halftime advantage.

Following a Beavers’ punt, the Admirals marched 80 yards in ten plays on their initial drive, capped off by Amon Johnson’s 3-yard TD run.  Johnson finished with 66 yards rushing on nine carries, with three touchdowns.

Drew Butler ended the next Karns possession with an interception and apparent 29-yard touchdown return, but the Admirals were flagged for a block in the back during the return.  From there, Cooper Hardin needed just one play to score from 20 yards out.  Hardin finished with 103 yards on ten carries, and two touchdowns.  It was Hardin’s first 100-yard rushing performance in his career.

Following another Karns punt, Adam Fulton led the offense on a five-play, 70-yard drive capped off with his 22-yard scoring toss to

Grayson Utterback, making the score 21-0 in favor of the Admirals.  Fulton also connected with junior TE Jacob Warren for 29-yard gain to jump-start the drive.  Fulton finished the night completing 8 of 9 passes for 110 yards and the one touchdown.

Isaiah Gibbs’ interception and short return set the Admirals up in great field position on their next series.  The Admirals covered 15 yards in five plays with Amon Johnson’s second short touchdown run.

On the ensuing Karns’ possession, Cooper Hardin’s sack was followed by an errant snap over the quarterback’s head in the end zone resulting in a safety.  The score was 30-0 Farragut with 10:20 to play in the second quarter.

Following the kick return, Fulton engineered another 8-play, 55-yard drive capped off by Hardin’s second touchdown, this coming from 11 yards out.

The Beavers proved resilient and were able to tack on a field goal on their ensuing drive to cut the score to 37-3.  Karns running back, Teahjawon Harper, broke off a 56-yard jaunt taking a snap from the “Wildcat” formation to set up the score.

Backup quarterback, Max Travis, engineered the next series for the Admirals.  The drive covered 88 yards in seven plays as Johnson scored from 26 yards out to extend the Admirals’ lead to 44-3.

Another big play on the drive was a 31-yard connection from Travis to WR Jaden Gibbs.  Gibbs finished with 53 yards on three receptions to lead the Admirals.

One series later, a Karns fumble was recovered by senior DE Brandon Guidish, and Travis marched the Admirals’ offense to another short touchdown drive.  The drive covered 45 yards on three plays with RB Isaiah

Gibbs taking it in from 23 yards out.  Gibbs finished with 72 yards rushing on seven carries.  The Admirals gave way to the annual Homecoming halftime ceremony by taking a 51-3 lead into the locker room.

After the break, sophomore QB Jake Evans led three scoring drives to conclude the night’s scoring.  Evans finished two touchdown drives with short runs of his own covering six and ten yards.

Sophomore RB Josh Moses squeezed a six-yard touchdown run of his own between the two Evans’ scores.  Moses’ score was set up by senior DB Joel Vinsant’s interception and 44-yard return into the Karns’ red zone.

In other highlights, senior OLB Trey Minix forced a fumble and recovered one other.  Senior P/PK Joe Doyle was 4-for-4 on extra-point tries and placed 4 of 5 kickoffs in the end zone for touchbacks.  Sophomore Zach Caro converted all five of his extra-point attempts to conclude the Admirals’ scoring.  The Admirals’ nine rushing touchdowns broke a school record for rushing scores in a single game.  The Admirals previously rushed for seven scores as a team vs. Soddy-Daisy in 2005.

The Admirals enter the bye week at 4-1 overall, 1-1 in Region 3-5A, ranked 8th the state in Class 5A.  Farragut returns to action on Thursday, September 29, in a pivotal Region game with Campbell County on Pilot/Flying J’s Rivalry Thursday.  The Cougars currently hold a 5-0 record and #6 state ranking in Class 5A.  For more info about the game, check out the game preview page and look for the Admirals on twitter @FarragutFB .

Adam Fulton connected with Jacob Warren on a 30-yard touchdown pass with 2 minutes, 49 seconds remaining as Farragut High School’s football team outlasted visiting Bearden 28-27 on Friday at Bill Clabo Field.

Joe Doyle’s ensuing extra point gave Farraggut its only lead of the game. It’s the Admirals fourth consecutive victory over their biggest rival and their 17th win in the past 19 games in the series.

Fulton finished with four touchdowns, including passes of 6

yards and 43 yards to Jaden Gibbs. He also connected with Davis Simmons on a 41-yard TD pass as the Admirals rallied from a 20-point deficit in the first half.

His decisive pass to Warren came four plays after Bearden was stuffed on fourth-and-1 at the Farragut 9-yard line. The Bulldogs could have extended their lead to nine in the final minutes if they had instead kicked a field goal.

Fulton’s heroics overshadowed a stellar debut for Bearden freshman quarterback Collin Ironside, who threw four touchdown passes in his first start. His final pass attempt on fourth down was incomplete as Farragut survived.

Jordan Ferguson helped Bearden take control early, outjumping a Farragut defender on touchdown catches of 19 and 23 yards in the first half. He sparked another score by intercepting a Fulton pass in the end zone, before throwing a 38-yard pass to freshman London Stephney.

Ironside then connected with Stephney on a 45-yard TD pass two plays later. John Matthew Lee’s extra point was blocked as Bearden raced to 20-0 lead.

Fulton responded with second-quarter touchdown passes to Jaden Gibbs (6 yards) and Davis Simmons (41) to cut the deficit to 20-14.

Fulton pushed the Admirals to the Bearden 5-yard line in the final seconds but was sacked by Sam Coffin to end the half.

The game underscored a scary moment in the first half, when Farragut senior wide receiver/defensive back Alex Hazlewood was carted off via ambulance after making a special teams play. He laid still on the turf while trainers attended to him, but raised his right arm to the crowd before being transported to University of Tennessee Medical Center.  He was released a short time later following the game.
